Update and Question of the Day

An update on those who expressed concern about my last post: All is well at The House of Portliness, and I truly was just processing some emotional content (I'm pretty emotional, actually, and when it's high tide for me, I prefer to surf without distraction). I may post on the exact whos/whens/whats/wheres at a future date, but today, I'm just enjoying my return to equilibrium, and not feeling particularly profound or insightful.

So, I'll just be posting a Question of the Day (inspired by the movie I just watched):

If you had the ability to travel backward (or forward) in time, what would you do with this skill?

(BTW -- the inspiratory movie was a living ambiguity for me -- loved the premise, suckered by the special effects, groaned out loud many times at the cinematic condescensions, enjoyed verbally reaming the producers, director, and editor for coping out on a potentially great concept, and now absolutely must read the short story upon which it was based. Guess what it was. Hint: Released within the last year.)

PD, we all have those days - no further explanation necessary.

I think that, little by little, you'll know exactly what I'd do.

And I have no idea what the "inspiratory movie" was, but the question does sound familiar. :)

An "Inspiratory" movie is one which: Inspires.

And yes, my bearded bro, I think I know EXACTLY what you'd you. ;-)

But I STILL want the fucking details.

Loved the *crickets* post, btw.

OFGS! "You'd DO", not "you'd you"

Although that has a nice ring to it.

OT & BTW, I'm beginning to think that the whole Beard-Stroke Stout thing was just a ploy to get my picture...

(for one of those dark of the moon esoteric midnight secret rite thingys, no doubt)

(if my beard spontaneously combusts, I'll know why, eh?)

Good to hear, PD! Umm, as to the question of the day, I think what may be utmost for me is a chance to go back and tell a 20 year old me that losing a relationship you shouldn't have been in in the first place is not the end of the world, and that there's plenty of life still left to live. I can't calculate how much that would mean to the person I was back then.

Hey to you both (Jack and Phyd).

Don't worry, Phydeaux -- I'm still working on that label -- and if I was going to make your beard spontaneously combust via witchiness, I would need something with DNA complement -- like an actual strand of hair, or something.

With your photo, all I can do is make you irresistibly attractive to the object of your desire. Sorry.

My Dear PortlyDyke,
If you can accomplish that (which I have been trying to do for over a decade) I shall be eternally and infinitely in your debt!

I don't have a photo of her, but I'll be glad to send you her email address... don't know what her current boyfriend will think of the whole thing, though.

Well, Mimzy, I think Back to the Future might have ruined me for time travel. Can't be certain, but I'd probably be to chicken-shit to try it. Wouldn't want my arm to disappear. If I had the guts, I'd go back and teach my 23 year-old self all about credit.

Liberalandproud wins the Contest! Yes, it was "The Last Mimsy". I loved the premise, and could have strangled the writers/director for some of the shit they did with it.

Like the Homeland Security guy at the end just saying: "Whoops. My Bad! Can I get you guys a cup of hot chocolate or something? No? OK, well, I'm just going to fly off in my Black Hawk, then. See ya!"

Also, looking at a few of the scenes they deleted (I had presumed in order to get their PG rating) -- it wasn't hot sex, or violence -- it was one or two second references to population control, and women's equality!!!

After all, we must think of the children.

Holy Crap!

Well, I'm with the "talk to my younger self" crowd, but I might toy with the idea of going back and bumping off Adolphe Quetelet.

LOL! It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. :-)

I'm trying to figure out how to say "I'd go back and tell Moira the Younger not to shoot herself" without sounding melodramatic, but I can't. Obviously we survived the experience, but it sucked mightily and the scars linger. My hands used to be pretty, but the set doesn't match any more.

Kate217 said... July 16, 2007 at 2:03 PM

Moira, I can't tell you how grateful I am that your hand is the biggest physical casualty of that experience.

PortlyDyke said... July 16, 2007 at 10:29 PM

Moira, darling, IMHFO, there is no true story that is "melodramatic" -- the more I read of the real lives of beings, the more I understand. And these true stories are powerful, for me.

I, for one, and glad of who you are now.

I have come to the conclusion that I would not fuck with my past (although maybe with my future), because I believe that every "scar" I now bear is a part of who I am now.

I treasure you as you are. Your hands may not match, but I think that, simply by virtue of being part of the beautiful Moira, they are beautiful.

*Kissing both your hands from afar*
PD
Sorry if that's too mushy.

Unknown said... July 17, 2007 at 6:34 AM

Too mushy? Oh, no. Not at all too mushy. It made me blush a little, but people tell me that's not a bad thing.

Thank you, both you and Kate, for your comments. Reading them was a most lovely thing first in the morning. :)
